Conflict is an inevitable part of our daily lives and finding constructive ways of dealing with interpersonal conflict is an important aspect of the growth and maturation process for today’s youth. However, the ease with which today’s youth can obtain firearms and the increased lethality of firearms compared to other weapons, creates the perfect storm for deadly consequences, particularly when kids have not yet mastered the important negotiation and de-escalation skills necessary to successfully address conflict non-violently. This year’s conference brings together experts from law enforcement, education, mental health, social services and juvenile justice, together with parents and our young people to find solutions to these 2 fundamental questions:

How do we equip today’s youth to handle interpersonal conflict non-violently?
How do we keep firearms out of the hands (and the bookbags) of our kids?

Objectives

  • Become more aware personally, and help our youth become more self-aware, of the early warning signs of evolving and escalating conflict in themselves and in their peers.
  • Acquire skills necessary to de-escalate conflict between our youth, and to help these youth to acquire these same skills themselves.
  • Understand the many ways by which today’s youth come into illegal possession of firearms, and how these can be successfully interrupted.
