The pervasive prevalence of social media and its impact on adolescents has been a popular and evolving conversation for many years. The collective experience of COVID-19 heightened our attention to the role of technology and social media in our daily lives; however, many are already overlooking the ongoing exposure of teens to these platforms and their impact on wellbeing. Teens are more connected in today’s online world of social media than ever before but are at the same time more isolated and at risk for negative outcomes as a direct result of these tools.
This workshop will explore prevalent health issues facing teens and the implications of the social media world on the adolescent experience. The concepts of adolescent relationships and bullying, behavioral health, and body image, and the implications of today’s social media world on each of these areas, will be explored. How one’s identity, including identification as an LGBTQ student or racial and ethnic background, influences each of these unique areas will also be discussed. Educational videos from The Big Picture, a production written and performed by local high school students in collaboration with Teen Health Connection, will help to illustrate and explore these concepts from an adolescent perspective.
Workshop participants will develop a deeper appreciation for how social media shapes and impacts the adolescent experience and their mental health and will develop practical strategies to help teens positively engage with social media and harness these tools more effectively. Participants will have access to the educational videos from The Big Picture to facilitate dialogue with teens and families in the future.
