There is currently insufficient knowledge of the importance of recruiting more and more diverse cord blood donors among providers positioned to encourage families to do so. There is also insufficient knowledge among providers about the value of cord blood units even when they cannot be used for transplant.
Bringing physicians up to date on the expanding ways cord blood can help cure sick patients, helps them encourage their patients to donate their babies' cord blood. Stem cell transplants using cord blood stem cells have long been a crucial means of curing cancer and other blood diseases. But recently, cord blood has also become a building material for engineered cellular immunotherapies to directly attack cancer, as well as a potential building block for regenerative medicine.
This lecture will review all of these crucial roles of cord blood in helping cure sick patients - transplant, engineered cellular therapy, and regenerative medicine, from a physician scientist experienced in all of these areas. It will also help physicians understand the potential of research based on cord blood and help them convince their patients to allow cord blood not useable clinically, to be used for non-profit research.
