Target Audience

Physicians, nurses, physician practice staff and all other health care professionals interested in improving patient and other healthcare delivery outcomes by applying QI methods and tools to their work.

Description

At this practical 2 part course, participants will gain the knowledge and skills to implement quality improvement (QI) or process improvement (PI) techniques at/in their professional setting. Basic QI methodology will be discussed such as the Model for Improvement and Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles along with developing interprofessional teams, aims and ideation. The methodology discussed may be utilized in any setting and applied to any clinical or administrative function. Participants will be introduced to basic QI tools that can be practiced between course sessions utilizing a small self-chosen Quality Improvement activity.(Although not mandatory, it is recommended that participants to come to the course with a pre-determined small personal quality/process improvement opportunity).

Objectives

  • Discuss a quality improvement methodology and its components
  • Explain at least 3 basic tools used in Quality Improvement
  • Recognize elements effective strategies for interprofessional team development
  • Identify & implement a small personal quality or process improvement opportunity in their work or home settings
  • Create essential components of a QI project in application to a participant chosen improvement opportunity
  • Start a sustainability plan for chosen improvement opportunity
