The 5th Annual LGBTQ Symposium for Healthcare Professionals: Facing the Challenge – Finding Hope! is dedicated to all health care providers who seek to understand the unique health considerations and barriers for the LGBTQ population. This conference provides an opportunity for professionals and community members to come together to share best practices and practical information that will lead to improving healthcare systems and better provide equitable and accessible healthcare for LGBTQ population.

A carefully selected group of experts will discuss topics of interest that affect the health and well-being of patients who identify as LGBTQ.

Nurses must attend at least 90% of the program in order to receive the full CE contact hours.

Charlotte AHEC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 5096. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Charlotte AHEC is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.

Objectives

  • Discuss personal struggle and journey to living an authentic life and true self.
  • Identify symptoms and effective treament approaches for depression and anxiety of LGBTQ population.
  • Recognize the additional stressors brought on during COVID Pandemic to the LGBTQ population.
  • PFLAG member will share their journey with their transgender child, to include coming out, family acceptance, seeking health guidance, challenges and victories.
  • Explain three unique substance use problems in LGTBQ populations
  • Discuss how on'e sexual orientaiton and gender identify/expression might affect treatment/recorvery from a substance use disorder.
  • Discuss culturally informed and culturally sensitive counseling to LGBTQ population.
  • Identify interventions that clinicans can use to create a welcoming environment for the LGBTQ patients.
  • Describe the impact of ACE scores on health behaviors and chronic medical and mental health concerns.
  • Describe greater impact of ACE Scores in LGBT community.
  • Identify treatments to counter impact of ACES.
  • Define spirituality and religion.
  • Explore the benefits of sprituality.
  • Identify the historical place of LGBTQ persons in religious and spiritual traditions.
  • Address religious/spirtual woundedness and recovery for LGBTQ persons.
  • Explore ways to enhance and grow in our spirituality.
  • Review reproductive choices options requiring reproductive endocrinology.
  • Describe an evidence-based project which assessed and improved clinicans beliefs and behaviors with LGBTQ individuals.
  • Identify factors which put LGBT individuals at risk for HIV and disparity in healthcare.
  • Identify ways in which clinical settings can provide a more affirming environment for LGBT individuals in clinical settings.
  • Discuss reproductive choices and reproductive alternatives for LGBT community.
  • Explain future planning considerations for LGBT community.
  • Review three types of letter (Doctor's letter, social security letter, and passport letter) for a person who is transitioning and wants to update identity documents
