Diabetes 101 for Pharmacists and Nurses

Description

Healthcare providers today are challenged with integrating diabetes management guidelines into every day practice. To be most effective, a common level of understanding is needed by all healthcare personnel who interact with patients and families affected by diabetes. This workshop is designed to provide a basic overview of diabetes for all levels of providers. This knowledge-based CPE activity will focus on the basics of diabetes and how the health care professional can support the person with diabetes.This workshop is available onsite and as a webinar.

ONLINE WEB WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS will receive 3 hours of credit. Instructions for online access for this program will be emailed to you a few days before the program.

ONSITE PARTICIPANTS will receive 4 hours of credit. The last hour of credit will include hands on classroom activities from 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM.

Continuing Education Credit For Pharmacists:
This activity is eligible for ACPE credit, which will be applied for through the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, a continuing education provider accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.

Continuing Education Credit For Nurses:
3.0 CNE contact hours for those attending the webinar;
4.0 CNE contact hours for those attending the onsite workshop.
Charlotte AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education contact hours by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Objectives

  • 8:30AM - 11:45AM Recognize the impact of diabetes through review of current epidemiology and predictions of future incidence
  • 8:30AM - 11:45AM Describe the central components of the pathophysiology of diabetes and their connection to genetics, lifestyle and medication efficacy
  • 8:30AM - 11:45AM Identify basic non-pharmacologic advice to patients seeking information on lifestyle modification to prevent or treat diabetes
  • 8:30AM - 11:45AM Describe the basic pharmacology of each class of oral and injectable medications used to treat diabetes
  • 8:30AM - 11:45AM Compare and contrast each class of medications used to treat diabetes in regard to their impact on glucose, safety profile, and clinical outcomes
  • 8:30AM to 11:45AM Describe a step-wise approach to providing patient-centric diabetes management through patient cases
  • 11:45AM to 12:45PM Recognize and be able to briefly counsel patients on appropriate portion sizes of foods, food categories and meal balance
  • 11:45AM to 12:45PM Identify appropriate methods for constructing a healthy meal using food models
