The Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Nurse Education Day is a full-day educational event created to share evidence-based guidelines, comfort care and bedside manner practices with nursing staff that assist in the treatment of care for patients living with sickle cell disease.

Grant goals:
•Increase the number of providers adhering to the NHLBI guidelines to provide care for persons with SCD
•Increase the pool of providers offering evidence based SCD care by disseminating technology based provider support tools (tele-mentoring and telemedicine)
•Develop and implement strategies to improve access to quality care in a SCD medical home with a focus on individual and family engagement

Learning Outcomes:
Integrate critical thinking and scientific knowledge to solve health problems associated with sickle cell disease.

Develop collaborative relationships with inpatient and acute care nurses with hematology teams and their patients.

Discuss nursing professionalism and comfort care based on ethical responsibilities when treating patients with sickle cell disease.

Objectives

• Discuss the universality of implicit bias and how it pertains to the care of patients with Sickle Cell Disease
• Discuss the genetics and pathophysiology of sickle cell disease and how this leads to pain and other complications of the disease.
• Outline assessment of patient with SCD with consideration given to possible differences of the patient presentation in the acute and chronic setting.
• Identify tools to objectively assess and quantify pain in SCD.
• Identify strategies to ensure consistent pain management in patients with SCD
• Discuss the patient perspectives and experiences during care encounters for SCD.
• Discuss the benefits of coordinating care for patients with SCD across the continuum of care.
