Description

To assist Mental Health Services throughout the region by providing guidance in working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals. This presentation, facilitated by the North Carolina Division of Services for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing, includes interactive activities and information to promote and ensure the same standard of care for every patient.

Objectives

  • Identify the needs of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing population encountered in the mental health setting
  • Discuss appropriate modes of communication & best strategies to ensure culturally competent care for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients
  • Distinguish the unique knowledge needed to assist & serve those in this population
  • Describe the laws & standards of care appropriate for communication access
  • Apply strategies that can eliminate barriers frequently encountered by Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind, or Late Deafened clients
  • Relate communication techniques that can be used between hearing individuals & individuals with hearing loss to facilitate care and coordination for best health outcomes
