Target Audience

Respecting Choices® Advanced Steps® ACP Facilitator Certification is intended for healthcare clinicians (nurses, social workers, chaplains, physicians) and others involved in assisting those with serious illness or frailty in making treatment decisions based on their goals of care.

This workshop is jointly provided by Charlotte AHEC Nursing Education and Your Care, Your Choice.

Respecting Choices® Advanced Steps® ACP Facilitator Certification Course (formerly "Last Steps") assists participants in learning effective communication and conversation skills and techniques for facilitating person-centered conversations for those living with advanced medical conditions and frailty.

The Advanced Steps ACP Facilitator Certification course is intended for healthcare professionals (nurses, social workers, chaplains, physician, advanced practice providers) and others involved in assisting those with advanced medical conditions and frailty in making treatment decisions based on their goals of care and converting them to medical orders utilizing the North Carolina MOST form.

Workshop Prerequisites
Completion of the Respecting Choices® Online ACP Facilitator Core Curriculum is required before attending the workshop. The online component includes interactive courses intended to help you learn basic ACP concepts and to come to the course prepared for a more robust classroom experience. Contact hours for the online prerequisite are available through Respecting Choices®. Upon completion of each of the five individual modules, you will be able to download contact hour certificates.

*Registration fees include the required online curriculum, as well as the on-site workshop.
Upon completion of registration, participants will receive a key for an “online seat” to access the online curriculum.

Note- It is not required to take the First Steps Course prior to attending the Advanced Steps Course.

The term “certification,” as used in Respecting Choices® educational programs and products means that Respecting Choices® issues a certificate upon fulfillment of the following elements:

1) completion of a specified Respecting Choices educational program with standardized content and processes;

2) successful demonstration of skills associated with the specified program; and

3) if applicable, an 80 percent or higher score on a written examination associated with the specified program.
The Respecting Choices certification programs are not credentialed by a national accreditation body.

  • Demonstrate beginning competency in facilitating Advanced Steps ACP conversations through role-play exercises.
  • Become certified as an Advanced Steps ACP Facilitator through final competency role-play demonstration
