Description

This program is being offered in cooperation with UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing.

Mental health assessment skills and problem management techniques are essential for all nurses and health professionals. This one-day workshop will focus on the utilization of the mental status exam to improve patient care, suicide assessment and patient safety, and care of the patient and family dealing with addiction. Content addressed will be applicable to both inpatient and outpatient care settings as well as behavioral health and non-behavioral health settings.

Learning Outcome:
Participants will be able to increase the knowledge and skills of mental health assessment and problem management in related to suicide assessment and patient safety and care of patients and families dealing with addiction.

Objectives

  • List the difference between integrated and integrative care.
  • Define the purpose, use and components of a Mental Status Exam.
  • List the warning signs of individuals who may be experiencing suicidal ideation, intent and/or actions.
  • Identify and list the steps of the SAFE-T assessment.
  • Differentiate between substance use, abuse, misuse and dependence.
  • List the symptoms of substance abuse and misuse.
  • Identify the risk and protective factors that impact individuals and substance use disorders.
  • List the steps of SBIRT including screening tools.
  • Identify brief interventions.
  • Recognize ASAM criteria for levels of treatment.
  • Understand MAT and the importance of Naloxone.
