RNs or LPNs caring for aging population in an acute care, long term, or home/community care settings.

Description

This program is provided in cooperation with UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing.

Caring for the aging population presents unique clinical challenges. As the world population ages there is increased focus on living longer and maintaining quality of life while aging. It is essential for nurses to address the multiple complex health care needs of this population. This program will provide discussion on ways to assist elders in maintaining health and quality of life and assist in distinguishing the processes of “normal aging” and illness.

Objectives

  • Discuss nursing implications of the changing demographics of older adults in the US.
  • Discuss the changing role of nurses in diverse care settings.
  • Compare physiologic changes of aging with changes related to disease, disuse and misuse.
  • Identify tools used in the assessment and care of older adults.
  • Identify strategies that encourage healthy aging.
  • Describe attitudes and skills that enhance cultural competence in caring for the aging population.
  • Discuss physiologic changes that may influence medication use in older adults and outline strategies related to pharmacology that maximize benefit and minimize harm.
