Description

This workshop is designed to provide instruction and/ or a refresher course for the RN or LPN delivering care to patients receiving peripheral intravenous therapy. Content includes North Carolina rules and regulations, guidelines and resources for standards of care, complication management, assessment and clinical skills techniques, equipment, documentation guidelines, calculation of flow rates, and securement of the site.

Objectives

  • Locate Policy and Procedure for intravenous catheter insertion and therapy.
  • Select the appropriate supplies and equipment for initiating or discontinuing intravenous catheter therapy
  • Identify proper anatomical locations and catheter size for intravenous catheter insertion and therapy.
  • Demonstrate the procedure for intravenous catheter insertion.
  • Describe the procedural steps for changing intravenous solutions and intravenous tubing.
  • Describe and demonstrate how to convert a saline lock to an intravenous catheter infusion.
  • Discuss assessment and appropriate interventions for complications related to intravenous catheter site or infusion therapy.
  • Describe how to discontinue or convert an intravenous catheter infusion to a saline lock.
  • Differentiate common usage for isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic intravenous solutions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of dosage calculation to determine intravenous flow rates.
  • Identify terms and abbreviations specific to intravenous catheter therapy.
  • Document intravenous catheter therapy appropriately.
