Target Audience

High School students that love science and want to learn more about careers in healthcare.

Description

According to the CDC, $1 out of every $4 health care dollars in the United States is spent on one disease, diabetes. Why is this disease so costly? What does it do to body systems? Why are certain socioeconomic groups and ethnic groups more likely to develop diabetes? Workshop attendees will explore these questions as well as participate in a rat dissection to build on an understanding of organ systems and the impact diabetes has on those systems.

Objectives

  • Students will develop an understanding of the health care disparity in the U.S., particularly as it relates to diabetes.
  • Students will identify the functions of major body systems and how diabetes affects those systems.
  • Students will dissect a rat and compare/contrast rat and human anatomy. Special emphasis will be placed on major body systems and how diabetes impacts those systems.
