This knowledge-based CPE activity will review The Beers Criteria which has long served as a guide to safer prescribing practices in older adults. This program will review relevant updates to the Criteria, which was updated by the American Geriatrics Society in spring 2023.

Continuing Education Credit For Pharmacists:
The University Of North Carolina Eshelman School Of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The program ACPE # 0046-9999-23-136-L01-P (Pharmacist) provides 2.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit. To receive CE credit, you must complete the CE attendance form and the evaluation of the program. Statement of credit can be viewed and printed in CPE Monitor. Statements of CE Credit will be processed in approximately 2 to 3 weeks. **No partial credit will be available**

Objectives

  • Identify additions to the Beers Criteria list of potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) in older adults.
  • Discuss the rationale for adding these medications to the list of PIMs.
  • Summarize additional changes to the Beers Criteria made or proposed in 2023.
  • Evaluate medication use and devise a plan to address drug therapy problems for an example patient scenario.
  • Explain limitations in general knowledge of medication use in older adults that stems from ageism in clinical research.
