Lactation consultants, nurses, certified nurse midwives, advanced practice providers, physicians, breastfeeding peer counselors and other healthcare professionals who assess and assist the mother-baby breastfeeding dyad.

Description

It takes a village to support healthcare professionals and breastfeeding families within the community. Join us and learn more about effective strategies for breastfeeding support for mothers and babies from an interprofessional group of experts.

Objectives

  • Burnette - Identify the essential aspects of respectful maternity care (RMC)
  • Burnette- Enhance awareness regarding the need for RMC
  • Burnette- Identify opportunities for personal and organizational improvement to provide RMC
  • Burnette - Participate in improving the birth experience for people obtaining health care in maternity settings.
  • Lawrence - Discuss the osteopathic philosophy and its its application for the breastfeeding dyad.
  • Lawrence- Review pertinent anatomy and physiology of lactation and infant feeding.
  • Lawrence - Discuss when to suggest consideration of osteopathic evaluation and treatment.
  • Lawrence - Incorporate osteopathic principles into routine practice.
  • Tully- Discuss postnatal unit experiences including skin-to-skin contact, overnight support, rooming-in, responsive clinicians, and understandable communication that correlate with early infant feeding outcomes.
  • Shaikh - Discuss appropriate newborn feeding recommendations for infants born to mothers who use illicit drugs
  • Shaikh - Explore breastfeeding considerations in infants at risk for neonatal abstinence syndrome.
  • Lima- List at least three differences between human milk and formula.
  • Lima - Choose a formula appropriate for a client based on the infant needs.
  • Lima - Describe three medical scenarios that require specialty formulas.
  • Lima- Describe the process of introducing solids for an infant with an established or at high risk for allergic reactions.
  • Dean - List at least three resources in their community that support lactating families
  • Dean - Duscuss the different types of resources that are available for lactating parent and their children.
  • Dean- Describe how to access and share helpful online resources
