Twenty percent of children in the United States live with someone with a substance use issue. Yet, those children are often misunderstood and often dismissed as resilient. This presentation will take a deeper dive into exploring the impact of parental substance use on children. More specifically, this presentation will outline what the research presents around outcomes and the social, emotional, and physiological risk to children as well as protective factors that can minimize those risks. Finally, a discussion around strategies in which professionals can further minimize the risks will wrap up the presentation.
