Description

This symposium will engage participants in novel uses of cord blood and birthing tissues in cell and regenerative therapies prior to and following treatment. Some examples of those novel therapies include: hematologic malignancies and metabolic diseases, as well as severe forms of T-lymphocyte and other immunodeficiencies.

Cord blood is derived from placentas after delivery of baby and would otherwise be discarded as waste if consent for donation is not given. Currently, there is an imbalance of ethnic donations available as minorities make up only a small percentage. For instance, according to the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), there is only 15% of collected units coming from African and Asian Americans. However, our goal is to increase those donations to be more diverse.

Public cord blood donation is a free program offered to patients at two Atrium Health facilities.
