Description

This quarterly series is designed for nurses and other healthcare professionals to learn more about current issues related to the care of geriatric patients. The one-hour sessions will provide up-to-date information presented by subject experts on hot topics relevant to care of the aging patient. Sessions will be held once each month in August, September, and October through live webinar from 2PM to 3PM as follows:

Learning Outcome:
To provide up to date knowledge, increase understanding, and identify resources available to enhance the daily nursing care of geriatric patients.

CE Credit:
1.0 Nursing Contact Hour / 1.0 Contact Hour / 0.1 CEU will be awarded to attendees who participate in one session. Nurses can earn up to 3.0 nursing contact hours for attending all 3 sessions.
The Charlotte Area Health Education Center is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

1.0 NCBPTE Contact Hour for each session attended for a maximum of 3.0 NCBPTE Contact Hours for attending all 3 sessions.
Charlotte AHEC, NC AHEC system, is an approved provider by the North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners with regard to activities directly related to physical therapy for continued competence.

1.0 Contact Hour / 0.1 CEU for each one-hour session attended.
Participants may earn up to 3.0 Contact Hours / 0.3 CEUs for attending three sessions.

Fee:
Registration Fee: $75.00 for all three sessions
Registration Fee for Session 2 & 3: $50.00
Registration Fee for Individual Session: $25.00

Objectives

  • Identify risk of falls, new disability, iatrogenic injury and medication errors.
  • Recognize levels of care differentiation in acute and post-acute rehabilitation.
  • Increase understanding of mobility challenges, therapies and decisions surrounding disposition.
  • Increase recognition of high-risk medication classes using the AGS Beers Criteria.
  • Understanding of Risk Benefit Analysis.
  • Recognize risks of "prescribing cascades" and strategies for deprescribing.
  • Distinguish between the 3D's: dementia, delirium, and depression and understand the overlap that exists between these diagnoses.
  • Differentiate between the types of dementia.
  • Identify types of delirium in the elderly patient.
  • Understand treatment options for older adults with depression.
  • Utilize common screening tools for assessing the 3D’s.
  • Provide guidance (both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic) for the management of the 3D’s.
