Objectives

  • Describe the evolutionary roots of breastfeeding and its significance in emergencies
  • Identify key barriers to breastfeeding
  • Describe steps for building a more integrated and equitable emergency response
  • Discuss why race & culture is relevant in breastfeeding support
  • Differentiate between cultural competence & cultural humility.
  • Integrate cultural humility into breastfeeding support
  • Understand how a mom makes her decision to breastfeed.
  • Explain how the breast produces milk.
  • List tips that identify how to know the baby is receiving enough breast milk.
  • Discuss the NICU environment and the impact on the breastfeeding parent and infant.
  • Define preterm infant and preterm challenges that affect breastfeeding.
  • Identify three mandatory, and one voluntary, practice-guiding documents for an IBCLC.
  • Describe how commercial marketing techniques are intended to influence clinical behaviors for lactation specialists.
  • Identify challenges encountered the mother baby dyad that may inhibit successful breast feeding.
  • Discuss the impact of breastfeeding challenges from the patient perspective.
  • Discuss resources available and ways to better support the breastfeeding parent/family.
