Target Audience

Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Speech Language Pathologists and Assistants working with acute care patients in all practice settings.

Description

Therapists are often challenged when presented with the complex acute care patients who may have cardiovascular and/or pulmonary dysfunction or complications, in addition to other medical conditions. Mobilizing these complex patients safely requires integration of the implications of lab values, diagnostic test results, patient history, medications and equipment.

The assessment and interventions begin with the bed bound patient, including those with mechanical ventilation and progresses these patients to sitting and progressive mobility. Signs of patient instability and when and how to modify or terminate treatment will be discussed.

This two-day live webinar will provide therapists with the knowledge, problem solving skills and all the red flags for assessing mobility, as well as the tools to develop safe and appropriate intervention programs for patients in acute care no matter their diagnosis.

Objectives

• Determine the indications, precautions and contraindications to mobility with all medications, lines and tubes commonly found in the acute care setting, including intensive care units.
• Discuss ICU competencies that are necessary for treating patients in the critical care setting.
• Determine how to start and monitor patient to determine how to progress activity (Once patient is appropriate for mobility).
• Assess and analyze responses to activity and make appropriate adjustments and prioritize the plan of care based on lab values, diagnostic test results, medications and patient history.
• Use sound clinical decision making, develop appropriate plan of care for mobility, speech, swallowing and breathing.
• Clinically problem solve through complex patients the monitoring and progression of activity including patients post CABG, patients with heart failure, patients with COPD or ILD.
• Select appropriate monitoring tools for mobility and interpret the results including outcomes and best practice documentation;
• Define social determinants of health and their impact on individual health.
