Gaston Substance Use Spring Summit: Caring for Others and Ourselves

Target Audience

Physicians, NPs, PAs, social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, educators/teachers, school personnel, mental health professionals, substance abuse professionals, clinicians, nurses, health and human service practitioners, concerned community members, emergency medical technicians, law enforcement, and people impacted by opioid use disorder.

Description



Using a comprehensive and stigma-free view of opioid use disorder (OUD), the program will enhance the effectiveness of front-line professionals who work to prevent and treat OUD. It will include presentations on harm reduction methods, cultural competency skills, the relationship between childhood trauma and addiction, meeting challenges posed by Covid-19, and using self-care to protect the wellbeing of engaged professionals. Each presenter will provide information for securing free local resources on their topic.

Credit will be given by session! Earn up to 7 hours!

Overview of Spring Summit
The fee for this course covers all topics - feel free to attend some or all!
Each topic will be from 12:00pm - 1:00pm on the scheduled day and qualifies for 1 hour of continuing education credit.

April 21st - Opioid Update
Jeffrey Ellison, Ph.D.
Dr. Ellison will address the extent and impact of the opioid epidemic in Gaston County and how it is changing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

April 28th - Opioids and Recovery Through the Eyes of Lived Experience
Karen Lowe & Chasty King
These presentations will describe the views and needs of individuals in active opioid addiction and in recovery. It will provide insights to develop reasonable expectations and effective communication when working with this population.

May 5th - Trauma and Addiction
Karen Melendez, MD
Dr. Melendez will describe the pathway of Adverse Childhood Experiences, which shows the link between childhood trauma and addiction in later life.

May 12th - Caring for Ourselves
Kelly Hamilton
Hamilton will present physical and meditative exercises to maintain the wellbeing of helping professionals who work with individuals living with opioid use disorder.

May 19th - Changing Paradigms: Engaging Law Enforcement as a Strategic Partner within a Harm Reduction Model
Ron Martin
Mr. Martin will tell his inspiring story of transformation from a New York City policeman enforcing law and order, to an advocate for persons struggling with opioid use disorder.

May 26th - Recognizing Signs of Addiction
Jennifer Vilardaga, PhD
Vilardaga will help participants identify symptoms of addiction across the lifespan.

June 2nd - Integrated Care: Managing Opioid Use in the Primary Care Setting
Jeffrey Ellison, PhD, and Sarah Dergins, LCSW
Dr. Ellison and Ms. Dergins will describe how primary care practices can integrate physical and behavioral health treatments and how to use this approach to treat opioid addiction.
