Description

This Part 2 continuation advanced course will discuss the impact of dementia on cognition, function and rehab. This course will continue to build on the skills necessary for communication and approach along with working within the environment and managing pain and other behaviors associated with unmet needs. Specific care approaches and plans for people at different and transitioning levels of dementias will be further explored. The conclusion of the workshop focuses on making changes to promote these new strategies within current settings of care.

In order to receive credit, all attendees must remain online for the full duration of the training day from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Breaks will be given throughout each training day and attendance will be monitored (partial credit will not be given).

Charlotte AHEC, NC AHEC system, is an approved provider by the North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners with regard to activities directly related to physical therapy for continued competence.

Speech-Language Pathologists – Charlotte AHEC will issue Certificates of Completion only. Speech Language Pathologist participants must self-track and record the certificate for ASHA Certification documentation. Up to 4.0 hours.

Objectives

  • After completing this course, attendees will be able to:
  • Discuss impact of structural and chemical changes associated with dementia specifically important to rehab professionals;
  • Describe signs of progression and transitioning between levels of dementia;
  • Demonstrate approach, communication and treatment adaptations to meet needs of PLWD at different levels of progression;
  • Describe strategies for meeting expressed unmet needs of PLWD using rehab skills, pain management approaches and organizing the day;
  • Discuss approaches for implementing new approaches to rehab of people living with dementia in current setting of care;
  • Discuss the impact of PPE when communicating with people with dementia.
