Management of the Cancer Patient in the Acute Care Setting - Part 2 - February 22, 2021
Objectives
- Learn 5 new strategies for rehabilitation and the cancer patient;
- Recognize 5 red flags for cancer presence;
- Describe 3 ways the geriatric oncology patient is more complicated and 2 theories why cancer develops in this population;
- Explain presence of chemo-induced neuropathy compared to a diabetic neuropathy;
- Analyze and discuss critical lab values in the cancer patients and their implications on treatment course;
- Develop a clear understanding of the differences between the most common hematological cancers and how to develop an appropriate plan of care;
- Learn how to accurately demonstrate the ability to use the appropriate outcome measures for the oncology patient in the acute care setting;
- Develop a deeper appreciation of the complexity of oncologic emergencies and how to adapt our treatments when appropriate;
- Leave with a clearer understanding of at least 3 orthopedic, neurological and surgical rehab considerations;
- Discuss new ways to adapt quickly to change in the acute care setting with patient status, disposition and plan of care;
- Identify the potential side effects of cancer treatments and their implications for acute care therapy;
- Develop a clearer understanding of cancer-related fatigue and how it impacts this population;
- Develop a deeper appreciation of handling patients and families at the end-of-life compassion, empathy and recognition of the stages of grief;
- Learn the signs of burnout and how to help prevent;
- Identify discharge planning barriers in the complex patient group;
- Discuss the role of the OT and PT for the hospice patient;
- Discuss challenging patient case studies.
