Target Audience

This 6-hour workshop is for Marriage and Family Therapists, Addiction Specialists, Professional Counselors, and other behavioral health professionals.

Description

The study of ethics is a lifelong process. This workshop stresses the application of professional codes of ethics that are critical and strategic to resolving ethical and legal dilemmas in the practice of marriage and family therapy. Ethical dilemmas and legal precedence will be examined through a case approach.

Objectives

  • Provide a practical working knowledge of essential legal, ethical, and professional issues bearing directly on the practice of therapy.
  • Be aware of common ethical and legal issues that present in the therapy room, including relational systemic challenges that are impacted by addiction, cultural considerations, and marital discord.
  • Demonstrate continuing values clarification and personal reflection to assert effective “self-regulation of the therapist.”
  • Identify and define specialized terminology including privacy, confidentiality, privilege,dual relationships, malpractice, breach of contract, client rights, duty to warn, etc.
