Description

This symposium will engage participants in cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus patient case prior to and following treatment using cord blood. Public cord blood donation is a free program offered to patients at three Atrium Health facilities. Cord blood is derived from placentas after delivery of baby and would otherwise be discarded as waste if consent for donation is not given.

Objectives

  • Participants will view cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus patient cases prior to and following the treatment of cord blood.
  • Participants will engage in discussion about the barriers to collect cord blood from the minority population and identify solutions to increasing the number of cord blood units collected from them.
  • Participants will view data from the three participating facilities and assess and recommend updates to the current cord blood collection process and procedures from consenting to collection
  • Participants will learn the history and evolution of cord blood banking and transplantation and how it has evolved into current clinical trials.
