Description

The overall objective and desired result of this workshop is to improve awareness and care of gender diverse and transgender youth in the healthcare setting. Despite a growing number of individuals who identify as gender diverse and transgender, access to appropriate and affirming healthcare is still limited. The 60-minute workshop will illustrate the barriers to healthcare that add to the existing social and health challenges faced by gender diverse and transgender youth as well as guidelines on how healthcare providers can provide affirming and inclusive healthcare to these individuals and their families. Additionally, the workshop will highlight the stories of families and caregivers who have gender diverse and transgender youth and the importance that affirming healthcare in their journey. At the conclusion of the workshop, learners will be able to: 1) identify culturally relevant LGBTQ terminology, 2) identify social and health challenges and barriers to care for gender diverse and transgender individuals, 3) identify guidelines for SUPPORT, and 4) identify local and national resources for treating and working with gender diverse and transgender individuals.
