This knowledge-based CPE activity will provide the pharmacist with an updated approach on anticoagulation in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and highlight therapeutic differences between Unfractionated Heparin (UFH) and Bivalirudin in this setting.

Objectives

• Summarize anticoagulation utilization in PCI prior to the current Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) guidelines release
• Describe the pharmacologic properties of UFH and Bivalirudin
• Discuss the role of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors (GPI) in this setting
• Compare guideline recommended anticoagulation management in PCI with current standards of practice at Atrium Health
• Examine published literature since the release of the current ACS guidelines and identify key findings in these studies
