Co-morbidity between eating disorders and substance abuse disorders is quite high, yet clinicians from each specialty often feel ill-equipped to address the other diagnosis. This training provides an opportunity for dialogue regarding the treatment of this challenging sub-group of patients. The basics in terms of the diagnosis and etiology of eating disorders will be reviewed, along with research regarding the co-morbidity between eating disorders and substance abuse, and how it potentially complicates the recovery process. Assessment and intervention strategies for eating disorders will be emphasized, with particular attention to what is possible to do within the community setting, and when it may be necessary to seek additional resources.
