Description
"Partnering with Poise"" is an Alexander technique based group course designed specifically for care partners that teaches skills for managing the physical and emotional demands of caregiving. Funded by a grant from the Parkinson's Foundation and designed and implemented by The Poise Project®, a nonprofit with the mission of maintaining poise and personal growth throughout all stages and challenges of life using the principles of Alexander technique (AT), the course was delivered at eight sites across North Carolina, including Charlotte and Concord, from September 2017-June 2018. Participants reported that the ten-week course helped them recover some personal independence, well-being and agency in the face of the many challenges that Parkinson's brings into their lives. Monika Gross was a co-author of the course protocols. She will share how the course was carefully structured so that the Alexander technique principles were integrated in an accessible and practical way, building skills cumulatively from week to week that resonated with this population and ""stuck"". The project was part of an IRB approved research study through the University of Idaho, and long term retention of benefits was demonstrated at six months post-course. Results from the study will be presented as well as some post-course video interviews with participants. For interested attendees, Monika will also lead some hands on demonstrations from the course material.
Objective(s)
Learn how Alexander technique training aids care partners by enhancing resilience, functional well-being, agency, and retention of Self.
Learn how the 10 week ""Partnering with Poise"" program was designed and implemented across North Carolina, and experience some hands on demonstrations from the course materials.
Review data outcomes from an IRB approved research study conducted with course participants.
