Description

Training provided by The Duke – UNC Tobacco Treatment Specialist Credentialing Program (TTS Program)

Participants for this training are pre-selected and will be given a code to register.

Background:

  • Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease and accounts for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the US annually. One in three cancer deaths in North Carolina is tobacco-related.
  • According to 2016 NC health data (BRFSS), only 59% of tobacco users were advised by a health professional to quit using tobacco products and only 24% of tobacco users were recommended medications and/or methods and strategies other than medication (such as referrals to Quitline, counseling or materials) to assist in quitting.
  • Reducing tobacco use and chronic disease remains a high priority for our community.

Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Overview:
The TTS Program consists of four days of face-to-face training and combines findings from the most current evidence-based research on pharmacotherapy, population-based issues, practical guidance on running a practice and targeted skills in tobacco dependence counseling. Information is provided in a workbook and through interactive lectures, as well as multiple problem-based learning activities, applied practice problems and practice counseling.

Training Benefits to Participant:
The Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) training course, materials and technical support are valued at $1,100. Participants must cover a $100 registration fee as a shared investment in the training. Completion of the Duke-UNC TTS course fulfills the training requirement for the National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice from NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals & Association for Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependencies.

To obtain certification, candidates must take a national exam, obtain 240 contact hours of direct cessation service within a two-year period after the training, sign an attestation of being tobacco-free and pay a $150 fee. For more information: https://www.naadac.org/NCTTP-FAQs
