High School Students
Students will learn about careers in cardiology, familiarize themselves with major vessels and chambers of the heart, and describe the flow of blood through a healthy heart. This knowledge will be applied through dissection of a cow or pig heart. Students will explore the arteries, veins, and chambers of the heart, and then conduct two mock surgeries to correct coronary heart disease and patent ductus arteriosus. The coronary bypass will allow students to take on the role of a surgeon as they locate a coronary artery on the heart and then complete a coronary artery bypass grafting procedure. Students will also learn that babies with patent ductus arteriosus have an opening between the aorta and the pulmonary artery, causing oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to mix. Students will locate this area on their heart, indicating where a surgeon would need to operate.
