The main goal of this activity is to provide practicing pathologists and pathology trainees with a review of important topics in gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatic pathology. The keynote speaker is Dr. John Woosley, MD, PhD, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who will present the 16th annual Walter R. Benson Lecture titled "Biopsy Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Tract Neoplasms". Dr. Woosley is a nationally-recognized pathologist and educator with particular interest and expertise in neoplasia of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and liver. Additional topics will include neoplasia of the liver and pancreas, infectious/inflammatory disorders of the GI tract, GI hematolymphoid lesions, and GI molecular pathology. Ample time will be provided for discussion and personal interaction between the attendees and speakers.

Objectives

  • Accurately diagnosis pancreatic neoplasms via FNA and/or endoscopic core biopsy, and avoid false positive diagnoses
  • Understand the classification of mucinous neoplasms of the appendix and apply this understanding to patient specimens
  • Distinguish between reactive lymphoid infiltrates and low grade gastrointestinal lymphomas, and know when to seek consultation
