Older adults are the fastest growing segment of our population with diverse and complex health histories and presentations. Nurses caring for older adults require specialized knowledge for planning, managing and evaluating their health care. To maximize the health outcomes of older adults, nurses must be able to effectively incorporate gerontological principles into their practice. This includes a focus on strengths and functional independence for health promotion along with chronic disease management. Nurses in all settings, whether primary, acute, long term, or home care, will benefit from improving their gerontological expertise through preparation for the ANCC Gerontological Nursing Certification Exam.
