Description

The dental team is faced with a growing number of reasons to communicate with patients concerning their medical health care coverage. Changes in our health care system have resulted in a growing trend of dentists being asked to submit dental procedures to a patient’s medical plan. This course will provide the participant with the knowledge necessary to successfully submit a medical claim. Dental procedures commonly submitted to medical will be addressed.

Objectives

  • Learn the various code sets used for the submission of medical claims
  • Understand the purpose and application of ICD-10-CM
  • Know which ICD-10-CM codes commonly apply to the dental practice
  • Learn which medical (CPT) codes are reported for extractions, radiographs, and other dental procedures
  • Understand how the ICD-10-CM codes are applied to support medical necessity
  • Learn how to complete a CMS 1500 medical claim form
  • Learn which procedures are often considered “medical in nature”
  • Know which medical codes are reported for common accident related procedures
  • Understand how cone beam imaging is reported to medical carriers
  • Learn basic Medicare rules and how it applies to the dental practice
