This interactive workshop will help nurses and other pediatric practitioners provide effective recommendations for parents and families dealing with common pediatric behavior challenges, including toilet training, temper tantrums, difficulty going to sleep (and getting out of bed in the morning), “picky-eating”, constipation, disobedience, high activity, “separation anxiety” and many more.

About the Speaker
Philip "Sandy" Zeskind, PhD
Dr. Philip “Sandy” Zeskind received his Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Developmental Psychology from the University of Florida and his PhD in Developmental Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his internship at Harvard Medical School in the Child Development Unit directed by T. Berry Braselton. He served as a university professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Developmental Psychology at Virginia Tech University and is now Research Professor of both Pediatrics and Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In the Department of Pediatrics at Levine Children’s Hospital, Dr. Zeskind directed the Center for Neurodevelopmental Research and has published over 70 research articles, chapters and books.

Dr. Zeskind is an internationally recognized expert in the field of early neurobehavioral development, has received research grants from such agencies as the March of Dimes, NIH, NIDA and NIMH and continues to serve as an editorial reviewer for many scientific journals.

Workshop Outcomes
After this workshop, participants will be able to describe effective recommendations for parents and families dealing with common pediatric behavior challenges.

Objectives

  • Describe how to identify the temperamental dimension underlying child (and adult) behavior.
  • Outline common pediatric behavior problems associated with each temperament dimension.
  • Discuss the specific questions used to conduct an optimal assessment of the specific temperament dimensions.
  • Relate specific recommendations that will effectively manage the behavior problems.
