This knowledge-based CPE activity will provide the healthcare professional with current and emerging evidence-based updates to help ensure best practices, minimize preventable healthcare related cost, and provide optimal patient care. Focused topic discussions will include updates in many areas including cardiology, smoking cessation, infectious diseases, pharmacy law, billing/telehealth and geriatrics.

Objectives

• Select an optimal medication regimen for patients at risk of developing heart failure or with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) using sodium-glucose transport protein 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) (CICCI)
• Compare evolving literature for renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system RAAS inhibition following acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and identify appropriate patients to be considered for RAAS inhibition following ACS (CICCI)
• Identify efficient strategies for eliciting and evoking change in patients interested in tobacco cessation (KOVAL)
• Select and implement alternative drug therapy strategies for patients unsuccessful with tobacco cessation monotherapy (KOVAL)
• Summarize current IDSA treatment recommendations for urinary tract infections (REYNOLDS)
• Review major updates in the primary literature regarding the treatment of urinary tract infections (REYNOLDS)
• Identify opportunities for antimicrobial stewardship for urinary tract infections (REYNOLDS)
• List provisions of the NC STOP Act (state Law) relevant to pharmacy practice (VICK)
• Identify the Federal PREP Act declarations and authorizations during the pandemic for pharmacists, technicians, and pharmacy student interns (VICK)
• Discuss the rules passed by the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy (NCBOP) and their application to the practice of pharmacy (VICK)
• Describe Pharmacist’s Role in Telehealth (McDaniel)
• Identify available technologies to assist in virtual delivery of clinical pharmacy services(MCDANIEL)
• Summarize best practices for engaging patients virtually (MCDANIEL)
• Identify methods for collaborating virtually with other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team (MCDANIEL)
• Describe how billing improves sustainability of pharmacy services within a physician office (SHEEHAN)
• Discuss billing process for Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and Medicare Annual Wellness Visits (AWV) (SHEEHAN)
• Identify other possible services for pharmacist billing (SHEEHAN)
• Discuss the extent and limitations of literature supporting use of antipsychotics for BPSD (WOODALL)
• Explain the risks associated with antipsychotic use in persons with dementia (WOODALL)
• Identify scenarios where it may be appropriate to use an anticonvulsant or antidepressant for management of BPSD (WOODALL)
