Description

This four-hour course has been designed to provide nutritionists, nurses, social workers and office staff who see patients in the health department, medical office or hospital setting with the tools to assist a patient who is making the infant feeding decision and getting started on the breastfeeding journey.

FACULTY:
Georganna Cogburn, MSHE, RD, LDN, IBCLC, RLC – Region 1 Breastfeeding Coordinator
Georganna has been a registered dietitian since 1984 and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant since 1992. She was a Public Health Nutritionist for 29 years with the Buncombe County Health and Human Services WIC Program where she assisted breastfeeding dyads. While at Buncombe County Health and Human Sciences, she also established the Breastfeeding Support and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program. Currently she works at the Mountain Area Health Education Center as the Region 1 Lactation Trainer serving the 16 westernmost counties of North Carolina and provides services to breastfeeding patients at MAHEC OB/GYN and Family Health Center. She has been the Region 1 Breastfeeding Coordinator since 2005 and in that capacity has trained Breastfeeding Peer Counselors, health department and health care provider staff throughout Western North Carolina. Since 1996, Georganna has been on the faculty and is the course director for the North Carolina Lactation Educator Training Program, a program offered in conjunction with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Northwest AHEC and Novant Health. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Western Carolina University in the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Lisa Baker, MS, RD, LDN, IBCLC - Region 3 Breastfeeding Coordinator
Lisa started working for the SC WIC program in December 1990. She began her career as a WIC nutritionist, as well as hired as the local agency breastfeeding coordinator. Lisa completed her Dietetic Internship and master’s degree in Human Nutrition from Winthrop University. After accepting the role as State Breastfeeding Coordinator for SC, Lisa became an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant. Lisa also provided lactation support services at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill as well as a Lactation Consultant and Registered Dietitian at a Sunshine Pediatrics in Rock Hill. Since 2014, Lisa has been working with the NC WIC Program serving as State Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator and most recently as the Region III Breastfeeding Coordinator housed at the Mecklenburg County Health Department in Charlotte NC. She currently manages six peer counselors for Mecklenburg County and serves eight counties in Perinatal Health Region III.

Objectives

  • Guide a client through making the decision to breastfeed
  • Discuss the benefits and contraindications to breastfeeding with a client
  • Educate a client on how the body makes milk
  • Assist a client with positioning and latch-on
  • Assess the effectiveness of breastfeeding and know when to refer for further assistance
