This program will acquaint the learner with the quick response the Virtual Critical Care Unit (VCC) developed to support the healthcare system’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. An overview of the processes put in place to help expand technology throughout the healthcare system as a strategy to reduce clinician exposure and help preserve personal protective equipment (PPE) will be presented. Nursing specific collaboration will highlight how workflows were modified to provide clinical and psychosocial support to both VCC and bedside colleagues. It will also describe the use of high-risk teammates to augment VCC staff during potential COVID-19 surge and management of rapidly evolving COVID-related information to ensure best practices were utilized.
Speakers:
Sandy Arneson, MSN-c, RN, CCRN-E
Sandy has been a nurse for 14 years, all in critical care. She was one of the first hires at the Virtual Critical Care unit seven years ago and has progressed from staff nurse, to clinical supervisor to program coordinator. Sandy developed the eMentor program which supports new critical care nurses in Atrium as they transition to independent practice. She is the clinical lead of the VCC Outreach Council and is responsible for chairing the Collaborative Group and its quarterly meetings which bring together clinicians from Atrium’s ICUs. Sandy is a member of the system’s Quality and Safety Council (QSOC) and the Critical Care Network (CCN).
Deena Denman, MSN-c, RN, CCRN-E
Deena has been a nurse for 12 years, with 11 of those years in critical care. She has been Clinical Supervisor/Acting unit educator at VCC since 2017. Deena introduced several local nursing schools to virtual care by establishing VCC as an official Atrium Health Clinical site. She is the clinical leader of the Unit Professional Development Council and is a member of several system level councils including Quality & Safety Council (QSOC) and Critical Care Network (CCN), Clinical Nursing Education Workgroup (CNEW) and the Professional Development Council (PDC).
Both Sandy and Deena are board certified critical care nurses who were part of the team who wrote the application that was awarded one of the first Beacon Awards of Excellence by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). They presented topics regarding innovative virtual nursing strategies at AACN’s National Teaching Institute (NTI) in 2018 and an article about VCC nurses will be published in Nursing2020 Journal.

80% of participants will report that this activity enhance knowledge about the virtual critical care response from an organization during COVID 19 pandemic.
