Target Audience

Registered nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists, optometrists, physical therapists, physicians, physician assistants, exercise physiologists (certified ACSM), podiatrists, and health care professionals with a master’s degrees or higher in social work who are interested in learning more about Diabetes and sitting for the certification exam to become Certified Diabetic Educators.

Description

Are you prepared to pass your CDE exam? This two-day course provides a comprehensive review to help prepare for the NCBDE exam. It is intended for qualified individuals who have job responsibilities that include the direct provision of diabetes self management education.

Objectives:
Identify knowledge needed to successfully prepare to take the certification exam;
Assess learning and self-care behaviors of the patient with diabetes;
Describe successful interviewing techniques to obtain a complete health history and patient needs specific to diabetes;
Discuss current treatment guidelines for the patient with diabetes;
Identify strategies for enhancing collaboration, compliance, and counseling;
Describe complications of non-compliance: chronic and acute for the diabetic
patient; medical and surgical treatment options;
Discuss non-insulin pharmacotherapy options for the treatment of type 2 diabetes;
Discuss different insulin delivery devices;
Discuss various insulin based regimens for the treatment of diabetes;
Review special documentation requirements;
Discuss implications for program development and management; and
Review principles of nutrition and ADA guidelines.

For Nurses:
14.75 CNE Contact Hours
Charlotte Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Nursing Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

For Pharmacists:
The application will be submitted to the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy for ACPE credit.


For Dietitians:
The application will be submitted to the Commission on Dietetic Registration for Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit.

Certified Diabetes Educator® and CDE® are federally registered trademarks owned and controlled by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE). Charlotte AHEC is not affiliated or endorsed by NCBDE. The NCBDE only accepts clock hour CEU credits from programs approved by providers on the NCBDE list of “Recognized Continuing Education Providers.”
