This course provides an overview of the potential content that may be tested on the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Ambulatory Nursing Certification Exam. It is a valuable opportunity to reinforce your knowledge of ambulatory care, identify your weak areas, and learn new information. Interact with nationally recognized faculty and colleagues to discuss information related to ambulatory care practice and the certification exam.
Course content is based on the test content outline for the ambulatory care nursing certification exam. All topics will be offered in an interactive, case problem solving style to enhance critical thinking.
Description of Practice
The ambulatory care nurse is a registered nurse who provides nursing care on an episodic basis, in which a single or a series of encounters is less than 24 hours in duration.
Ambulatory care nursing practice occurs in diverse settings such as, but not limited to, health care facilities, community-based settings, schools, workplaces, homes (telehealth nursing), and via multi-media communications.
The ambulatory care nurse utilizes cost-effective ways to assist patients and/or clients in promoting wellness, preventing illness, and managing acute and chronic diseases to optimize the patients' health status throughout their life span.
The patient and/or client engages in predominantly self-managed health activities or receives care from families (self-defined), with or without assistance from community based agencies outside the institutional setting
Course Outcome
After completing the Ambulatory Care Nursing Certification Review Course, the participant should be able to use the presentation to reinforce knowledge of ambulatory care nursing, self-assess the content areas where they need further review, and use the content presented as preparation for taking the certification exam.
About the Speakers
E. Mary Johnson, BSN, RN, NE-BC
E. Mary Johnson has been a nurse leader for the past 35 years. She is a Career Coach for Nurses and a Patient Navigator in Cleveland, Ohio. Her professional commitments have included serving on the Content Expert Panel for Nursing Leadership for the American Nurses Credentialing Committee (ANCC), past President and Board Member of AAACN, and former member of TJC Professional – Technical Advisory Board. She currently serves as a faculty educator for AAACN’s Certification Review Course, as an educator for On Course Learning for Ambulatory Care Certification.
She has written several articles on various nursing issues and authored the chapter on Patient Advocacy for AAACN’s Core Curriculum textbook. She is a frequent lecturer on issues of nursing leadership, nursing retention, mentoring and nursing certification preparation.
Susan M. Paschke, MSN, RN-BC, NEA-BC
Susan Paschke is a part-time instructor in the Nursing and Health Care Management program at Kent State University. Previous positions include chief clinical and quality officer at the Visiting Nurse Association of Ohio and roles as staff nurse, clinical manager, assistant director, administrator, and associate chief nursing officer for operations during her career at the Cleveland Clinic. She began her nursing career more than 40 years ago as an LPN and has experience in hospital inpatient care, ambulatory care, and the home care and hospice arenas. Her expertise is in clinical management, nursing leadership, and quality improvement. Most recently, she served as the Interim Director of Ambulatory Services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
Susan is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the American College of Healthcare Executives, the National Association of Healthcare Quality, Sigma Theta Tau and the Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses. She has been a member of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing for more than 25 years and has held various committee positions, presented at multiple national conferences and recently served on the Board of Directors and is a past president of AAACN. Susan is certified in ambulatory care and as an advanced nurse executive through ANCC and has been an instructor for the Ambulatory Care Nursing Certification Review Course since 2000 and for the online On Course Learning Ambulatory Review course since 2014.
