This knowledge-based CPE activity will provide the healthcare professional with current and emerging evidence-based updates to help ensure best practices, minimize preventable healthcare related cost, and provide optimal patient care. Focused topic discussions will include updates in the areas of infectious diseases, cardiology, psychology, geriatrics, and oncology.

Objectives

• Explain the rationale for the transition from trough- to AUC-based monitoring in the revised consensus guideline for therapeutic monitoring of vancomycin
• Identify the available methods for AUC-based monitoring in clinical practice, including Bayesian modeling and first-order pharmacokinetic calculations
• Discuss implementation steps for a successful AUC-based monitoring program
• Describe common etiologies of Gram-negative bacteremia (GNB) and the basics of selecting appropriate empiric antibiotics
• Identify the role of oral antibiotics for the treatment of GNB
• Summarize available data comparing short versus long courses of antibiotic therapy for GNB treatment
• Identify treatment options for adjunctive lipid-lowering therapy in patients at increased cardiovascular risk already receiving optimal statin therapy
• Describe applicable primary literature for aspirin in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease
• Summarize updates on potentially inappropriate medications as published in the 2019 Beers Criteria
• List medications NOT highlighted in the Beers Criteria which may still be inappropriate for a given clinical scenario
• Identify examples of the prescribing cascade, and discuss possible solutions to address or prevent this phenomenon
• Review the prevalence and etiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment resistant depression (TRD).
• Outline treatment strategies for MDD patients who do not respond to first-line medications
• Compare and contrast new treatments of TRD including efficacy, safety, and tolerability profiles
• Identify differentiating factors of new treatments for TRD to rationalize an optimal treatment approach
• Discuss the pathophysiology of myeloma
• Recall the role of hematopoietic stem cell transplant in the myeloma treatment schema
• List 3 classes of drugs used for the treatment of myeloma
