Opiates have been around for centuries; the war on drugs in the US actually began in 1909 with legislation against the import of opium for smoking. Part One of this three-part series further examines the history of opiates and their abuse in the US; how they work and signs of misuse; the statistics regarding opioid use nationally, regionally, and locally; and the current crisis in the US.
