As patients become older, polypharmacy – the use of multiple medications to treat conditions - can have negative consequences. This hour-long online module discusses examining the medications a patient may be taking; how those may possibly interact, causing side effects such as increased risk of falls; and which medications can be safely removed and how.

Method of participation: Online audio/video lecture, successful completion of post-test and evaluation.

Objectives

  • Define and identify risks posed by polypharmacy, particularly in older adults.
  • Explain benefits of reducing polypharmacy.
  • Describe a rational approach to deprescribing.
  • Given a patient case, identify target drugs for deprescribing and develop a regimen for discontinuation.
