Target Audience

Patient Safety and Quality, Nurse Managers and CNS’s of the system and regionally and all the Healthcare Professionals

Description

Introduce you to applying human factors principles and simulation to improving patient safety. We will examine how humans process incoming information and how errors can occur to anyone. Further, we will examine how simulation can aid in identifying system weaknesses and root causes of adverse events. This course highlights that most adverse events should not result in blaming someone but rather looking at how the system failed to prevent the error from occurring and we will discuss strategies to prevent future errors from occurring.

Objectives

  • Understand the basic concepts of human factors, ergonomics, and simulation
  • Identify how the stages of the information processing model can impact human performance
  • Practice recognizing and overcoming possible system barriers to patient safety
  • Identify 3 ways simulation can impact patient safety
  • Practice using simulation for proactively identifying system weaknesses, detecting root causes of adverse events, and evaluating solutions
