Target Audience

High school students that love science and want to learn more about careers in healthcare.

Description

High school students will spend a couple of hours in the shoes of a medical examiner and see what the job is really like.
Learn how science determines cause of death and time of death, as well as basic anatomical descriptors such as gender and age. Familiarize yourself with anatomy as you dissect and examine a fetal pig using the protocol of a human autopsy. You are sure to leave this session with an appreciation for the doctors whose work starts when the pulse stops.

Objectives

  • Increase awareness and understanding about a career as a medical examiner.
  • Differentiate between male and female skeletons.
  • Describe how skeletons can provide clues of a person's age.
  • Learn how an autopsy can reveal cause of death.
  • Dissect a fetal pig following a human autopsy protocol.
