Target Audience

Case managers, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors, mental health professionals, clinicians, nurses, health and human service practitioners, and other interested persons and health care professionals.

Description

This is not an introductory workshop on crisis intervention. For those involved in advanced clinical work, we will consider issues in working with suicidal persons, including prevention, intervention and aftermath. Topics include ethical issues, work with persons with chronic or terminal illnesses, self-injurious behaviors, legal and clinical standards of care, the impact of religious traditions and environmental factors such as childhood trauma, and the implications of failed or completed suicides on clinicians, families, and the community. Participants are encouraged to bring case examples for group discussion.

Objectives

  • Describe the most important risk and protective factors;
  • Discuss prevention efforts and their levels of effectiveness;
  • Formulate an agency prevention and aftermath plan;
  • Discuss practice issues regarding suicide, such as ethical considerations in interventions, use of contracts, legal and clinical standards of care;
  • Identify the influence of suicide and severe attempts on family, community and clinicians and the interventions that mitigate risky behavior.
