Target Audience

Any nurses who are interested in learning more about holistic nursing and integrative health.

Description

This program is designed to introduce nurses to the concepts of Holistic Nursing. Holistic Nursing is seen as a part of Integrative Health. This class will discuss the attributes of the holistic nurse; compassion fatigue and compassion renewal. A few complementary techniques will also be reviewed, as well as standards of practice, and criteria for holistic nursing certification. There will be an opportunity to practice a technique for self care, and a complementary therapy.

Charlotte AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Objectives

  • Define Holistic Nursing and name at least 3 nurse-theorists who contributed to the development of Holistic Nursing.
  • Explain how Holistic Nursing fits in Integrative Health.
  • Describe 2 of the attributes of the Holistic Nurse and why they are essential to his/her practice.
  • Explain how compassion fatigue can impact nurses and the care that they give to their clients.
  • Explain how self-care can work to decrease compassion fatigue and bring renewal. - List at least 4 simple self-care techniques - Practice one technique: meditation
  • List at least 5 complementary techniques that can be used by Holistic Nurses. Practice one complementary technique on each other: Healing Touch
  • Discuss criteria for certification as a Holistic Nurse, Standards of Practice for this specialty, and the status and importance of Holistic Nursing Research.
