Summit Information:
According to NC DHHS, North Carolina is experiencing an opioid epidemic because of decades of prescribing more opioids at higher doses. From 1999 to 2016 more than 12,000 North Carolinians died from opioid-related overdoses. This epidemic is devastating families and communities. It is overwhelming medical providers and is straining prevention and treatment efforts. Partners Health Summit supports North Carolina’s Opioid Action Plan and will provide solutions and treatments for the problem.

Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the causes of the Opioid Epidemic
  • Discuss the most effective solutions to the Opioid Epidemic
  • Apply one of the suggested treatments or programs for combating the Opioid Epidemic

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Omar Manejwala
Dr. Omar Manejwala will present “The Opioid Epidemic – A Wicked Problem".“Wicked problems” are complex systems with components that interact in complicated, poorly understood, and unpredictable ways. The Opioid Epidemic is a wicked problem—paradoxically, prescribing has reduced but overdoses have increased—there were 64,000 overdose deaths in 2016 and one estimate suggests 650,000 expected deaths over the next decade. Dr. Manejwala will review the evidence and provide specific guidance on what next steps are most likely to be effective.

Omar Manejwala, M.D. is an addiction psychiatrist, international speaker, former Hazelden Medical Director, and bestselling author of the book, Craving: Why We Can’t Seem to Get Enough. With over 15 years of experience treating addictive disorders, Dr. Manejwala is Chief Medical Officer of an LA-based national health services management company. He has treated thousands of patients with addictions from all walks of life, and is widely regarded as one of the nation’s leading experts on addiction.

This summit will feature six breakout sessions about local projects and programs currently used to treat opioid addiction in North Carolina.
