Description

There are many different forms of violence in society today, and although Youth Violence has traditionally been the focus of this annual conference, child abuse, domestic violence, suicide, bullying, elder abuse, and sexual violence are equally formidable societal ills. Traditionally, each of these forms of violence has been addressed in isolation, focusing on prevention strategies tailored to a single type of violence, but we now recognize that these multiple forms of violence have a lot more in common than previously thought, suggesting that our prevention efforts might be strengthened and enhanced through cooperation and collaboration, as opposed to the “working-in-silos” approach that is so often seen in large organizations and municipalities. This year’s conference will examine the similarities and associations between these related forms of violence, providing a foundation and a rationale for developing prevention strategies that can simultaneously address multiple forms of violence within a given community. More importantly, conference attendees will hear first-hand from community organizations who have been able to achieve significant violence prevention successes by developing partnerships with organizations dedicated to preventing seemingly very different forms of violence.

Objectives

• Understand the various forms of interpersonal violence that can exist, and co-exist in our communities today
• Understand the risk and protective factors that are common to all of these multiple forms of interpersonal violence
• Recognize how the similarities that exist amongst these various forms of violence provide an avenue (a basis) for a common approach to prevention for these multiple forms of violence
• Learn how organizations focused on preventing different forms of violence can utilize a common violence prevention strategy, and can thus collaborate, potentially achieving greater success than might be achieved alone.
