Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Certified Personal Trainers, Wellness Coordinators and Group Fitness Instructors
Description
In recent years, research has demonstrated the beneficial effects for people with Parkinson's Disease (PD). Exercise is favorable for the physical functioning, strength, balance, walking speed and health related quality of life of people with PD.
This workshop is designed to prepare personal trainers and fitness instructors to provide safe, high quality group and exercise programming for people at all stages of PD. The primary goal is to ensure continuity of care between physicians, physical therapists and community exercise providers to facilitate improved outcomes for people with Parkinson's Disease.
The workshop will be taught by a top exercise researcher, who is also a certified ACE personal trainer, along with a highly trained physical therapist with extensive experience working with people with PD. Didactic instruction will be paired with hands-on exercise experiences to ensure that participants are well prepared to work with populations with special needs.

This course has been approved by the North Carolina Board of Occupational Therapy for Continuing Competence Activity.
Charlotte AHEC, as part of the NC AHEC system, is an approved provider by the North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy Examiners with regard to activities directly related to physical therapy for continued competence.
NC Area Health Education Center is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc. to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers.
Objectives
- Describe how sensory, motor and cognitive symptoms impact walking, balance, flexibility, strength and function in people with Parkinson's Disease;
- Be able to explain the physical and emotional benefits of exercise for people with Parkinson's Disease;
- Be able to develop an individual and/or group exercise plan that is safe and addresses specific impairments found in people with Parkinson's Disease.
